The Charleston city council has approved the purchase of the Sofa Super Store property.
The council approved to purchase the site, and the city will pay $1,850,000 through bonds the city will receive.
Family members of the 9 Charleston firemen, who died at the store last year, representatives from the fire department and Charleston residents will give input as to what will go on the site.
Mayor Joe Riley says any memorial there will be in honor of Charleston's Fallen Heros.
Mayor Riley - "We feel that we got a correct price, and a good value for the citizens. We've bought land, in many ways it is pricelss..it is sacred and we will forever protect it."
The council approved the purchase, 10 to 2.
News 2's Warren Peper spoke to council member Kathleen Wilson. She said there was debate from 2 members, who thought spending this money was fiscally irresponsible, but Wilson thought it would be irresponsible for the city not to do it since it would honor the firemen and their families, on the land where they lost their lives.
